Update: finding a seat that was both comfy and not exposed to the elements was harder than I thought it would be, but I eventually found a 5-Series seat that worked and that I thought I could get out. Pro tip: bring some small gauge wire with you to use with the batteries they will have on site to move the seat forward to get at the back seat rail bolts. I ended up brute forcing it off the seat rails itself, and I was barely able to do that with the hand tools I brought.
All in all the end result is pretty satisfactory, I don’t have as much adjustment as I would if I had been able to get the rails out, but as I didn’t plan to attach it to my wheel frame (my frame is collapsible for easier storage) it’s not a big deal. I was able to adjust the back angle by jumpering the power to my car battery, so it fits well now and is much more solid and comfortable than the old desk chair I was using. As a bonus I top mounted my pedals the night before, as I was sick of having them moving around, and also my FiST has top mounted pedals so it feels more natural to have the top pivot.

I think I’m going to swing by a pick and pull after work today and look for a seat for my sim rig, any particular models I should be looking for? I’m fairly slim and tall (6'4", 210). I’m thinking a WRX or something similar, but really as long as it’s a manual track I don’t care too much...

Volvo leather seats.... R if possible but that seems very unlikely. The regular ones are pretty comfy anyway.... My wife’s ‘05 S40 had nice side bolsters. Our XC70 is more like a lounge chair but clearly quite comfy nonetheless.

Look for leather if you can. Cloth would have absorbed a lot of moisture and stuff from outside. Also get a passenger seat. They’re less worn out than the driver seat.

I’m 6'5" and 220lbs, I use a RX-8 seat I pulled from my late RX-8. It’s the biggest part that was still usable.
It is one of the best seats I’ve ever used.

Yeah that’s what I’ll be trying to get, along with manual because it’s waaaay cheaper.

I thought about Volvo but aren’t they all going to be electric?

I second this. The seats in the S60R are the best I’ve ever sat in.

Mazda3 leather seats are surprisingly comfy. Very nice bolstering, I’m not as tall as you but at 220lbs I’m very comfortable in my 04.

Hmm, true but you’re not going to move it, right? Yeah manual / leather will be a little hard to find.

Yeah those seats came to mind

It’s more the price increase that comes with power seats.

99 Cougar anniversary edition 2 tone leather is what I use for my desk chair.

Third the Volvo idea. I actually use the captain seat out of an XC90!
But, lots of P1 Volvos (S40, C30, V50, c70) have manual seats standard, especially passenger seats.
Or, the 2nd row captain out of an xc90 is all manual.
I mean they aren’t crazy bolstered but I can sit in am for hours comfortably

I use the 2nd row captain out of an xc90! It was a great choice

I ended up using a 5-series seat.

Excellent choice! Sport seat or regular?

Regular, there weren’t any sports seats that I could see, I imagine they either get snapped up fast, of get parted out privately. Pretty nice though.

But... lateral support in tight corners? Don’t fall off

Yeah I’d imagine sport seats are hard to come by. Those look identical to the seats in my E46, big surprise there....

I believe it was an e46 model

I built a set of jumper cables for my cordless drill battery, to move electric stuff like seats or windows at junk yards if I ever really need to. Much easier than hauling around a car battery, even if you can get one on-site.

Looks great.
So you don’t have any rails at all on yours?
Did you attach it to those wood pieces then?
I have the rails on my XC90 seat still but it does sit a tad too low for me and my pvc gaming setup.

That is a good idea, I would imagine 18V would work fine, I didn’t even think of doing that. Oh well, my solution ended up working, but I will definitely remember that in the future.

Clearly, my priorities are misaligned.
How’s Smog World? I have to get my guy to
fail
mine this week so I can get money from CARB for scrapping it.
